Arrow of Light

The highest Cub Scout Award.


Baden-Powell, Sir Robert S. S.

A British war hero, founded Boy Scouting in England in 1907.  He devoted his life to the program.  Boy Scouts around the world fondly call him B-P.

Boys Life

BSA's Magazine for Boys.


Campmaster Corps

Trained volunteers that help units camping at the Dan Beard Reservation.

Camporee

Boy Scout weekend camp and district competition.

Commissioner

Adult volunteers working at district or council level.  Unit commissioners are assigned to units and are a friendly resource to the unit leaders.  Roundtable commissioners provide training opportunities.

Commissioner Meeting

Monthly meeting of the commissioners at district level.

COPE

Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience.  (Boy Scout activity involving heights).

Council

The local area for Scouting.  The Dan Beard Council covers 5 counties in southwest Ohio and 7 counties in Northern Kentucky.

 


 

Daniel Carter Beard Founders Society

An organization of contributors to long term financial endowment of the council.

District

A subdivision of a council covering a specific geographic area.  The Dan Beard Council has 14 districts, plus a district for Learning for Life/Exploring.

 


Eagle

Highest rank in Boy Scouts.

 

Exploring

A part of the Boy Scout organization that focuses on exploring career opportunities for young men and women aged 14 to 21


Family Jamboree

Public-oriented scout show.  Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops display one of their favorite activities.  The boys help out their unit and should get time to visit all other units.

Fireside Chat

Fireside Chat is Dan Beard Council’s bi-monthly newsletter sent to registered scouters.

Friends Of Scouting (FOS)

Annual fundraiser for the council that supports a major portion of the total scouting program.

 





Jamboree

Scout camp on large scale that occurs every 4 years (approximately)  and recently done at Fort A. P. Hill near Washington D.C.

Jamboree on the Air

Scouting and “ham radio” makes international contacts through the "air", usually the third weekend in October.

 



Lodge Meeting

Meeting of the Order of the Arrow.  The Lodge includes all OA members in the Dan Beard Council.

 

Learning for Life (LFL)

A subsidiary of scouting in support of schools.

 



National Quality Unit

A national award showing that the unit has satisfied requirements in membership, finance, training, leadership, planning, activities, service, advancement, and registration.

 


Order of the Arrow (OA)

This is the national Honor Camper Society for youth and adult Boy Scout members.  Its purpose is to recognize leadership in units and provide service to Scouting.  New members are elected by their peers.

 


Pinewood Derby

Boys build wooden race cars from a kit (with adult assistance) and race them for prizes and trophies.  The races are usually done as a pack meeting.

Pony Express Box

A method of communication to unit leaders.  Each unit and everyone on the district staff have a mail slot in the Pony Express Box.  The box is usually stored at our local Scout Shop and is taken to Roundtables.


 

 


Rechartering

Completing paperwork needed to reregister your unit.  Unit commissioners help with paper work and computing fees.

 

Roundtable (RT)

Monthly meeting for Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders for training, idea exchange, fellowship, and information that is run by the district commissioner staff. 

 

 


 

Scout Service Center

Council scout office.  We have 3 Service Centers: the main office at 2331 Victory Parkway in Cincinnati (phone 513.961.2336), the Tri-County office at 7255 Dixie Highway in Fairfield (phone 513.860.2434), and the Northern Kentucky Scout Center at 3031 Dixie Highway in Edgewood (phone 859.578.9800).

Scout Week

Anniversary of BSA’s founding, in second week of February.

Scouter

Any registered adult leader in BSA.

Scouting for Food and Clothing

Good turn event collecting food and clothing for the needy.

Scouting Magazine

National magazine of Scouting sent to all registered adults.

 

Service Area

 

This is a geographical area within a council; Dan Beard Council has 3 Service Areas.


Tour permits

A planning tool to help units plan safe trips.  Use of a tour permit is required for the unit to be covered under BSA insurance.



Venture Patrol

A patrol of older boys in a scout troop.

Venturing

A program for young men and women who are 14 through 20 years of age focusing on high adventure activities.  Units are Venturing Crews.

 


 

Woodbadge

 

Advanced Adult Leader Training in all areas of Scouting.
