The District Finance Chair's responsibility is to support the Council's
fundraising activities. Successful financing of the Council is the direct
result of successfully conducted fundraising programs within each
District.
The Finance Committee’s work includes recruiting and
training a committee to help raise donations within the District. The
“Friends of Scouting” Campaign makes up a majority of this activity,
and it is divided into two parts -- the Community Campaign and the Family
Campaign. The Community Campaign raises money within the local
community from business leaders and companies. The Family Campaign raises
pledges from the families who have youth in the program.
All of the Friends of Scouting money goes to meet our goal as
set by the Council for the operating budget. This money helps:
-
Maintain
the BSA Council camps
-
Support
the professional staff
-
Provide
materials for leader training
-
Provide
support for setting up new units.
The District Finance Chair also oversees
project fundraising such as popcorn sales and Scout Show (Family Jamboree)
ticket sales within the district. Ft. Hamilton produces an excellent
revenue stream not only for the Council but the local units as well.
And lastly the Finance Chair has the responsibility to inform
units on proper fundraising activities allowed by the BSA.
DID YOU KNOW THAT:
-
Less
than a third of our budget comes from the United Way.
-
Program
fees cover less than 25% of the budget.
-
Most
of the remainder of the income must come from Friends of Scouting.
- Over
85% of our budget goes towards unit service and program-related expenses.

It takes money to operate Scouting
programs.
Individual units raise some money on their own through
dues and various fund raising efforts, but most of the money that supports
Scouting, funds camps, and pays the salaries of the professionals whose
jobs it is to make Scouting work is donated through Councils. If you
would like to donate money to support the Dan Beard Council (or any other
Council you prefer), you can go to the
Give2BSA webpage, enter the ZIP code 45206 for the Dan Beard Council
(or enter whatever other ZIP code you wish to use to locate the council
that serves that ZIP code area) and then fill out the donation form
accordingly.
Your gift will make a positive difference
in the lives
of many young and future leaders of our communities and our country.
Avoid Funding Scams!
The link above to GIVE2BSA is a legitimate link and provides
official guidance on donating to Scouting. However, you should be
aware that there are a number of non-Scouting organizations who use
Scouting’s name to raise money for themselves with little, if any, of what
they collect going to Scouting. The Boy Scouts of America maintains
a legal issues website at
http://www.bsalegal.org/contributions-237.asp that contains a Statement
from the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America Regarding
Solicitations. This statement explains how some of these outside
solicitations work, how the Boy Scouts of America does not solicit funds
this way, and what you might want to do should you ever receive these
unapproved solicitations.
