The Latest News

Planning for Peterloon 2008 is under way, it is scheduled for October 10-12, 2008, and the Peterloon website is now active at www.Peterloon.DanBeard.org.  All Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, and Webelos Scouts are invited to attend.

Separate activities are being planned for the Webelos Scouts, but they will also have the opportunity to observe some of the older boys’ activities including participating in the Rockin’ Arena Show.  This will be a great opportunity to give them a look at what Scouting holds for them and encourage them to stay involved and cross over.

Unit leaders can get all the registration and cost information you need at http://Peterloon.DanBeard.org/Registration.htm.  The deadline for discount registration is 9/19/08.

We also have a process for volunteers or leaders who won’t be registering with their units (but would like to attend and participate in the activities anyway) to register as part of the district contingent.  You can download the Ft. Hamilton Peterloon Registration Form (31k Word doc) and email it to Jerry Oberlag at Oberlag.GA@pg.com.

Becky Gorman has agreed to serve as the district’s hospitality chair again this year, but she would like to have a full time assistant to work with her.  If you can help, please contact her at rpg@fuse.net.

There are two big changes this year you should be aware of.

  1. The Miami Nature Conservancy has created a 300 foot buffer zone alongside the Miami River that cuts into the camping fields at Camp Lower Craig and reduces the amount of space available.  To avoid losing any more campsites than necessary, there will be no on-field parking of vehicles this year.  Troop trailers may be used in the campsites, but all vehicles will have to park at the remote parking area after unloading.

  2. Due to the migration of the Emerald Ash Borer into the area, a state ban has now been placed on moving unfinished wood into or out of any of the counties in southeast Ohio.  This means any firewood you wish to use at Peterloon must be obtained in Clermont County, where the camp is located.  In addition, any wood (poles, spars, braces, supports, etc.) used for gateways, fences, camp tools or gadgets, tentage, hammocks, etc. must be debarked and sealed with varnish or shellac before entering Clermont County or arriving at camp.  No barked or unsealed natural wooden materials may be brought in to Peterloon.

Due to the reduced space for campsites, please register early to make sure you get one.

Ft. Hamilton Cub Day Camps

Our first Cub Day Camp of the year is almost here.  Day Camp South begins Monday June 9, and Day Camp North follows a month later beginning Monday, July 14.  Join us for a week of games, sports, arts, crafts and shooting sports (BB guns and Archery)!  This year’s theme, “Cub-lympics”, promises to deliver lots of excitement!

You can register online or printout registration forms to fill out and mail in.

We still need a lot of help from adult and youth volunteers.  Day Camp is staffed entirely by our Cub Scout and Boy Scout volunteers.  Assistance from our district Boy Scout Troops is needed at both our 2008 Day Camps to lead small groups of Cub Scouts as Den/Tribe Leaders, and we are currently several youth leaders short of our minimum requirements.  Remember, Boy Scouts can fulfill their leadership and/or service requirements while having fun at the same time.  Volunteers should download and fill out the Volunteer Registration Form.

All adult and youth volunteers should attend one of the following training dates:

We have also created a Flyer/Newsletter that provides more information you can print out and take to your units to answer their questions and promote the Day Camps.

Order of the Arrow

We have updated the Tsungani Chapter of the Order of the Arrow page on our website.  The updates include the chapter’s current schedule of events, officers’ listing, and meeting location.  Please check it out, and while you are there, please notice that the Chapter just earned the coveted Honor Chapter Award.  This is a major accomplishment, and we congratulate all the Chapter members and leaders.

We've updated two areas of our website to reflect the realignment of the Ft. Hamilton District.  We have posted the changes in our slate of District Committee positions on our Contact Us page, and we have revised the list of Scout Units currently in the district on our Unit Directory page.

We would like for the leader of each unit to review the changes in our Unit Directory and make sure we are showing your unit’s information correctly.  If you find any errors, please email the Webmaster.

Also, we are still trying to confirm the meeting location of each unit including the community name and ZIP code where they meet so we can update our Units by Location page. If your unit is showing with the wrong information or if it is not showing at all, please send the correct information to the Webmaster.

Attend Roundtable: Stay Informed!

We will hold Roundtable Meetings the second Wednesday evening of each month from 7:00 – 9:30 to provide information, coordination, and training to unit leaders.  Check out the Events Calendar for specific locations and instructions.

New Training Opportunities Page

We have created a new Youth Training Opportunities Page for our website where we will post training opportunities for the youth in our Scouting program.  It will be located as a subset of the Advancement Page, and you will be able to navigate to it by clicking on the “Providing training and advancement opportunities to the youth in our district” item in the bulleted list of services being offered by the Advancement Committee.

If you have any training opportunities you would like to see posted on this new page, send them to our webmaster along with information on dates, times, locations, any pre‑requirements, and description of the training.

Webelos Transition

Council has developed a program to better manage and support the transition of Webelos Scouts into Boy Scouts.  You can view it by clicking on the Webelos to Scout Transition Plan (218k PDF).  It's an excellent plan which makes it much easier to manage the transition process, and it will result in retaining many more of our Scouts.  If you need any help with this program, contact Charlie Garrison, our Membership Chair, or our District Director, John Register.

District Chaplain

Our District Chaplain, Rev. Jim Chester, is now on-line and available to all units and individuals in our district to help everybody in his role as spiritual advisor and counselor for the district.  His office phone number is 513-942-5570, and his email address is chapljim1@yahoo.com.

He is available to provide the following aids and services in our district:

  • Provide training to unit chaplains and youth chaplain aides
  • Help promote earning religious service awards
  • Help units prepare appropriate non-denominational religious services
  • Provide a spiritual tone for various Scout group meetings
  • Provide spiritual counseling service when needed or requested

Check out additional District & Troop Chaplains services and links to Religious Scouting web pages on our Chaplains Committee Page.

Adult Knot Awards

If you are interested in how to nominate a Scouter for the Silver Beaver or the District Award of Merit or if you want to understand the requirements for any of at least 32 scouting “knot” awards that you can wear on your uniform, check out our Adult Awards page.  Each picture of a knot on this page is linked to another page that contains a picture of the actual medallion the knot represents as well as a detailed description of the requirements for earning the award.  A link to this page is permanently located on our Advancement Committee page in the last bullet list item labeled “Promoting adult awards".

Yahoo Email Groups

We have established email groups at Yahoogroups.com to enable better communication throughout the Ft. Hamilton district.

For units, our objective is to have the Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, or Crew Advisor of each unit join their appropriate Yahoogroup along with their unit’s Committee Chair and Charter Rep. as a minimum.  Other leaders, volunteers, parents, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts are welcome to join as well so they can be kept quickly abreast of developing information, ask questions, and access stored files such as Roundtable handouts, special forms, etc.

All Commissioners should join the Commissioners Yahoogroup, and all members of the District Committee should join the District Leaders Yahoogroup.

To join one of our Yahoo groups, send an email message to Bob Wylly, our Communications Chair, at bwyllybsa@fuse.net requesting membership in the specific group(s) you wish to join (Packs, Troops, Crews, Commissioners, District Ldrs.). Please include the following in your message:

  • Your name: ________
  • Your unit number: ________
  • Your role or position in your unit: _______
  • Your phone number(s): ________

You can view our Yahoogroups Information Page for more information.  We encourage broad participation regardless of your role.

Congratulations!

Scouting the Web

Ft. Hamilton District has been notified we are the recipient of the Scouting The Web Award of Excellence for August, 2004!  In the notification from the Award committee, they said: "One of the best district sites we've ever seen!...It is very apparent that a lot of work has gone into your site.  Your site is a true asset to the Scouting community with the great resources and information you provide for Scouts and Scouters.  A link to your site has been placed under our awards area".

WOW!  This came as quite a surprise.  A big Thank You goes out to the Scouting The Web Award Committee for considering us for this honor.  In looking at some of the sites in the awards area above, we are in the company of some extremely well done web sites around the world!  We are very proud to receive this award!

"Scouting is this country's single best program for building character in youth and instilling positive religious and family values and has been for nearly a century."
